A Good Parent-Teacher Relationship

By February 23, 2023June 11th, 2024No Comments

As we all know, a parent is the first teacher and the teacher is the second parent of the child. A teacher can inspire a child to reach academic success; a parent can inspire their child to use that success in a way that influences positive change in the world. Together with the teachers of Casagrand International School, you can give your children the roots to grow and the wings to fly. A good relationship between the teacher and the parents is important for the growth and development of the children. It is not your relationship but your partnership that is going to mould your child.

When school and family work together to support learning; children tend to do better in school. Positive parent-teacher communication in our school benefits students to score well in school and live better in society.

Benefits of parent-teacher relationship

When parent, as well as teacher, shares their efforts and observation with each other, a parent can work at home on the feedback and the observation shared by a teacher at school and the teacher can modify the way of handling the child on school premises.

Benefit for parents

Oftentimes children are affected by the things that parents might not recognise unless they maintain close attention and a relationship with the child. By maintaining healthy communication with teachers you can ensure that the child’s learning and development are consistent across school and home. This way, if a child is struggling in any academic or social areas it can be taken care of and they can be appropriately supported in a timely manner.

Benefit for teacher

When parents take the initiative to guide the child at home, the teacher can concentrate on their primary purpose of teaching. A teacher will have an idea of the student’s environment which will help the teacher to cater to the child’s needs or requirements.

Benefits for students

When teacher and parent have a positive strong collaborative relationship, students feel calm, relaxed, safe and cared for overall. This gives them the confidence to grow into their best selves, reaching their full potential across different development areas. There is a lot of evidence showing that the involvement of parents and teachers benefits students in the long run. This includes better academic performance, increased interest in learning, improved behaviour, regular attendance and a positive attitude about homework and school work.

The three C’s the teachers of Casagrand International School follow to form a constructive parent-teacher relationship:

parent-teacher relationship

There are three main components the teacher of Casagrand International School follows to build a powerful partnership with parents. They are represented as three C’s: Communication, consistency and collaboration.

Communication:

The first is communication between home and school. Communication between the parent and teacher is the key.

  • Approach the parent as early as possible when the academic year starts and throughout the year to let you know the role that you have to play in the child’s education.
  • Choose the best mode to communicate. This can be as simple as sending notes home with your child, leaving a voice message, emailing important information or other methods unique to your situation.
  • Have clear, open, constructive and timely communication with the parents. Frequent two-way communication is important to stay apprised of what is happening at school, and let you know the important thing about the child. Home-school notes are especially effective.

For parents: Attend meetings with questions and observations about your child’s efforts and behaviours. Not just with grades and achievements. Let your child’s teacher know about your child’s strengths and challenges, likes and dislikes, and what you hope he or she accomplishes during the school year.

Consistency

The second component of an effective relationship is consistency. The teachers of Casagrand International School are providing consistent opportunities to enhance the child’s learning at school and home that reinforces the notions that the parent and teacher are working together to support the child.

  • Teachers suggest ways to work with the child at home to encourage their learning for a successful school year. Scheduling homework time and establishing a quiet place, providing learning materials and encouraging healthy eating habits and physical activity all contribute to their success.
  • Discuss the teaching method to follow at home to ensure that the teacher and the parent are “on the same page”. This kind of activity sends a consistent message to the child to know that parent and teacher together support the child’s learning.

Collaboration

The third component of a relationship is collaboration. Collaboration is easier if communication is frequent and consistency is sufficient. This involves planning and problem-solving to develop specific, positive strategies to help children achieve to their highest potential and gives extra support to reach a goal.

  • Make an effort to understand the child’s goals and expectations. Communicate about how you can be a partner to help the child to achieve the goal.
  • Plan and problem-solve around issues that may arise. If the relationship and communication channels are developed early, it will be much easier to address challenges if they appear. Collaborative planning of parent and teacher involves acknowledging the need to work together to address a concern, staying focused on finding a solution, making plans that involve support and responsibility at both home and school, following through on plans and checking back to make sure progress is being made.

Ways teachers of our school follow to build an effective relationship with parents:

  • Share updates of what is happening in class through quick pictures and videos; the syllabus is to be taught, and updates via the school newsletter.
  • Inform via email or phone call when their child experiences something wonderfully positive or sad or unsafe at school along with some suggestions if needed.
  • When concerned about a child’s health, academics or social behaviour, meet with parents with an approach to collaboratively solve the problem.
  • Provide a strategy, if the child is struggling with academic or social concerns.
  • Share the strength of the child.

Ways parents can build relationships with teachers:

  • Participate in school activities that extended for families or that request parent volunteers.
  • Share information related to the child’s health, and academic or social behaviour.
  • Try not to be aggressively asking questions or talk negatively about the teacher in front of them or not to them.
  • Share praise and appreciation and positive feedback, not only issues and negative feedback.

Trying to be open, honest and respectful communication is the best way to maintain a relationship between the parent and teacher. Ultimately, strong parent-teacher relationships will enable the child to flourish. “Together let’s give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly”.
